Schematic of the three chamber WRIC. These comprise of the 23-hour studies, resting metabolic rate/thermic effect of food (RMR/TEF) and Exercise WRIC’s.
Department: Endocrinology
Location: Manhattan, NY USA
Principal Investigator: Dr. Jeanne Albu
Operational: 2011

This is the RMR/TEF WRIC. This comfortable room has an interior volume of 4,500 liters and has access to WIFI. This allows for maximum subject comfort for error free RMR measurements.
The 23-hour studies WRIC. It is essentially the size of a small studio apartment, with an interior volume of 21,299 liters. This WRIC obtains metabolic and macro-nutrient utilization measurements during a 23-hour study.
Control area with a single Sable System Promethion instrument. Notice the valve system that allows connection of the instrument to either the 23-hours, RMR/TEF or Exercise WRIC’s. These integrated instruments measure oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor pressure within the WRIC. This eliminates the need for drying the sample gases. Notice the small foot print of the instrumentation. This was the first production Promethion and still going strong after 12 years.

Another example of what type of metabolic measurements that can be conducted within the Exercise WRIC…Jazz drumming.
The energetics of just about any physical activity can be measured within the Exercise WRIC.
Computer work station within the 23-hours study WRIC.
Futon bed within the 23-hour studies WRIC that is rated to 200 kg.
Exercise WRIC with an interior volume of 10,000 liters. A cycle ergometer is shown to the left. Other types of exercise equipment can also be used for metabolic measurements (right).
