Schematic of the three chamber whole room indirect calorimeter (WRIC). These comprise of the 23-hour studies, resting metabolic rate/thermic effect of food (RMR/TEF) and Exercise WRIC’s.
Control area with two Sable Systems Promethion instruments. These integrated instruments measure oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor pressure within the WRIC. This eliminates the need for drying the sample gases. Notice the diverter valve above the instruments. This allows one instrument set (right) to measure the sample gases from either the RMR/TEF or Exercise WRIC. The other Instrument set (left) is dedicated to the 23-hour studies WRIC.

The RMR/TEF WRIC, with an interior volume of 7,557 liters, is a comfortable room with television and WIFI. This allows for maximum subject comfort for error free RMR measurements.

Exercise WRIC with an interior volume of 14,804 liters. This shows a cycle ergometer but the three-meter ceiling height also allows use of tall exercise equipment. Notice the blood sampling access port on the right side wall.
